Have you ever been to the Calgary Stampede? The greatest thing I took from a short work placement in Alberta was learning to dance the two-step at the Rodeo City Saloon. I appreciate things that are simple and the two-step was both fun and easy to remember. It was right up my alley. While dancing in your workplace may be inappropriate there is a way to enjoy your day, minimize your stress, contribute to wellness in the workplace and improve the quality of your work. This is the Wellness Two-Step and those two steps come from a Master teacher named John Milton who told me that Relaxation and Presence are the two basic elements of ultimate wellness.
The Wellness Two-Step
1. Relaxation: Relax your body by allowing the shoulders to gently fall down and away from your ears. When a tense moment occurs, notice the contraction in the body first, consciously relax and then choose your response. This will prevent unconscious reactions that create stress and disharmony in the workplace.
2. Presence: Be aware of your breath gently coming in and out the nose. Let go of the past and do not indulge in the future for a moment. When you are present with yourself you are better able to be present with others in your workplace.
Keep Dancin' and Have a Great Day!
